But where does this &#8220;phase&#8221; in the pickup come from? It's a combination of two main factors: the direction in which the coil is wound and the magnetic polarity of the magnets inside it.<\/p>\n<p>Every pickup has a copper wire coil. This wire is wound around the magnetic poles. The way the wire is wound (clockwise or counter-clockwise, to simplify) and from which point it starts (the beginning or the end of the winding) determines the electrical polarity of the signal the pickup produces. In practice, each coil has a &#8220;beginning&#8221; (start) and an &#8220;end&#8221; (finish).<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, one of the two ends of the coil wire is connected to the &#8220;hot&#8221; of the guitar circuit, and the other to &#8220;ground&#8221;. If I reverse these two connections, I have inverted the electrical polarity of the signal. Simple, right?<\/p>\n<p>Then there's magnetic polarity. Pickup magnets have a North pole and a South pole. The vibrating metal string passes through the magnetic field. The interaction between the string's vibration, the magnetic field, and the direction of the coil winding is what generates the electrical signal. If one pickup has a North pole facing the strings and the other has a South pole, this also affects the phase of the induced signal. Fortunately, most pickups, at least traditional ones, are designed to be compatible with each other in terms of magnetic polarity, but this is not always the case.<\/p>\n<p>The real problem arises when mixing pickups from different manufacturers. There is no universal standard for which wire is &#8220;hot&#8221; and which is &#8220;ground&#8221; for each type of pickup. This means that if you take a Seymour Duncan humbucker and a vintage Fender single coil, and connect them following standard colors, you might end up with an unexpected phase inversion when using them together.<\/p>\n<p>Let's take humbuckers, for example. These four wires correspond to the beginning and end of each of the two internal coils of the humbucker. If there is also shielding, that always goes to ground and should not be touched.<\/p>\n<p>How to identify the wires, if they are not labeled or if you don't have the manufacturer's diagram? The simplest, garage method, is the &#8220;tap test&#8221;. Connect the pickup to the amplifier (even temporarily, with alligator clips). Touch the pickup poles with a small metal screwdriver. You will hear a &#8220;bump&#8221; or a &#8220;clack&#8221; in the amplifier. If you touch the poles with the screwdriver while connecting it to hot and ground in one way, and then reverse the wires and touch again, you will hear that the sound of the &#8220;bump&#8221; has a different polarity (one will be more &#8220;forward&#8221;, the other more &#8220;backward&#8221;). It's not scientifically precise, but it gives you an idea. To be more precise, a multimeter set to AC millivolts, with the guitar connected to the amp and a constant signal (like a metronome or a loop), would allow you to see the peak polarity.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the key is to understand that &#8220;phase&#8221; is a term that describes the relationship between two signals. A single pickup alone does not have an absolute &#8220;phase&#8221;, it has a polarity relative to a ground. Phase becomes a problem (or an opportunity) when you put two or more pickups together.<\/p>\n<h2>When and why you want to invert the phase (the &#8220;strange&#8221; sounds)<\/h2>\n<p>Ok, we've chewed on some theory. Now, let's get to the point: why would we ever want a &#8220;scooped&#8221; or &#8220;thin&#8221; sound? The answer is simple: to have more tonal options. The electric guitar is a universe of sounds, and sometimes that &#8220;strange&#8221; sound is exactly what's needed.<\/p>\n<p>The sound of two pickups in <strong>out of phase<\/strong> is unmistakable: it's scooped in the mid-frequencies, often has a more &#8220;quacky&#8221; or &#8220;nasal&#8221; attack, and a slightly lower perceived volume. It's not a sound to use for a powerful, full-bodied riff, but it can be fantastic for funk rhythm parts, particular blues solos, or for adding a different texture to a clean passage. It's a sound that &#8220;cuts&#8221; well in the mix, without being intrusive.<\/p>\n<p>A classic example is the sound of Peter Green, the legendary Fleetwood Mac guitarist. It is said that his Les Paul &#8220;Greeny&#8221; had one of its humbuckers with inverted phase, producing that iconic and somewhat mournful tone, especially in the middle selector position. Maybe you won't always use it, but when needed, having it available makes a difference. And in a world where everyone seeks the &#8220;perfect&#8221; sound, sometimes controlled imperfection is precisely what sets you apart.<\/p>\n<h2>How to invert the phase: the practical side with switches<\/h2>\n<p>Here we are, hands-on. Theory is useful, but in the garage, you act. <strong>Inverting the phase of a pickup<\/strong> is an operation that requires a minimum of soldering skills and an understanding of a small component: the DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) switch.<\/p>\n<h3>Preparation and Materials<\/h3>\n<p>Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n    <li>A soldering iron (good quality, not the cheap toy).<\/li>\n    <li>Solder for electronics (lead-free if you prefer, but make sure it's good).<\/li>\n    <li>A pair of wire cutters and needle-nose pliers.<\/li>\n    <li>A screwdriver to open the guitar and disassemble the components.<\/li>\n    <li>A multimeter (not mandatory but very useful for checking connections).<\/li>\n    <li>A small DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) switch. In practice, it has six solder pins: three for one &#8220;pole&#8221; and three for the other. When the switch is in one position, the center pins are connected to the pins on one side; when it's in the other position, they are connected to the pins on the other side.<\/p>\n<p>For phase inversion, we will use both &#8220;poles&#8221; to swap the &#8220;hot&#8221; and &#8220;ground&#8221; wires of the pickup. When the switch is in the other position, the hot of the pickup goes to the ground of the circuit, and the ground of the pickup goes to the hot of the circuit. Et voil\u00e0: inverted phase!<\/p>\n<h3>Considerations for 4-Conductor Humbuckers<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a 4-conductor humbucker (plus shielding), the situation is slightly different but offers more possibilities. These pickups have wires for the beginning and end of both coils. Standard colors vary (Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Gibson have different schemes), so it is essential to consult the manufacturer's diagram. Generally, two wires represent the beginning and end of the first coil, and two others for the second. For phase inversion of the entire humbucker, you must first join the two coils in series (as usual) and then treat the humbucker as a single two-conductor pickup for the inversion.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to do things properly with a 4-conductor humbucker, you can also combine phase inversion with coil splitting. But that's a story for another article. For now, let's focus on &#8220;simple&#8221; phase inversion.<\/p>\n<h3>Where to mount the switch?<\/h3>\n<p>You have several options for positioning your switch:<\/p>\n<ul>\n    <li><strong>Mini-toggle switch:<\/strong> Requires making a small hole in the pickguard or body. Make sure to measure carefully before drilling! It is the most common and visible solution.<\/li>\n    <li><strong>Push-Pull\/Push-Push Potentiometer:<\/strong> Many volume or tone potentiometers are available with an integrated DPDT switch. This allows you to use an existing knob for activation, without drilling the guitar. It's my preferred solution, aesthetically cleaner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, soldering is a matter of practice. Don't be afraid to make some &#8220;ugly&#8221; solders at first. The important thing is that the connections are solid and well insulated. Now comes the moment of truth: does it work? There's nothing more frustrating than closing up the guitar and finding out it doesn't work or that the sound is worse than before. But with a few simple tests, you can verify your work.<\/p>\n<h3>The Screwdriver Test (Tap Test)<\/h3>\n<p>This is the quickest and most immediate method to get an indication of the phase. Connect the guitar to the amplifier (with the guitar and amp volume at a decent, but not exaggerated, level).<\/p>\n<ol>\n    <li>Select the two pickups you have modified (the one with the phase switch and another one it will interface with).<\/li>\n    <li>With the phase switch in one position (let's say &#8220;normal&#8221;), gently touch the poles of the modified pickup with the tip of a metal screwdriver. You will hear a small &#8220;clack&#8221; or &#8220;bump&#8221; in the amplifier.<\/li>\n    <li>Without changing the position of the pickup selector, operate the phase switch on your guitar.<\/li>\n    <li>Touch the pickup poles again with the screwdriver.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the phase reversal works, you will hear that the sound of the &#8220;clack&#8221; changes. It might be less pronounced, or have a different, almost &#8220;thin&#8221; quality. It's not a definitive test for the ear, but it confirms that the switch is indeed swapping the wires.<\/p>\n<h3>The Real Sound Test<\/h3>\n<p>This is the most important test, because it's the one that will tell you if the sound you get is what you wanted. Always with the guitar connected to the amplifier:<\/p>\n<ol>\n    <li>Select the pickup you modified and another pickup (for example, the neck and middle, or the bridge and neck, depending on where you installed the switch).<\/li>\n    <li>With the phase switch in the &#8220;normal&#8221; position, play some chords and single notes. Listen to the sound, its body, its fullness.<\/li>\n    <li>Now, operate the phase switch to reverse the pickup's phase.<\/li>\n    <li>Play the same chords and notes again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What should you hear if the phase reversal works correctly? The sound should become thinner, more scooped in the mid-frequencies. It might seem less powerful, with less sustain, and have a &#8220;nasal&#8221; or &#8220;quacky&#8221; quality. It's not a &#8220;better&#8221; or &#8220;worse&#8221; sound, it's simply very different. With only one pickup, phase reversal has no audible effect.<\/li>\n            <li>It could be that your pickups were already slightly out of phase with each other to begin with, and the reversal only brought them more &#8220;in phase&#8221; or into a less pronounced out-of-phase state. It's a balancing act.<\/li>\n        <\/ul>\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A trick I learned: don't close up the guitar right away. Do all tests with the pickguard or plate loose. That way, if you need to rework a solder joint, you don't have to disassemble everything from scratch. And don't rush. Patience is the virtue of the garage luthier.
