That feeling of having an instrument that doesn't give you confidence, that seems to sabotage you every time you try to play something decent. At first, I thought it was my fingers' fault, then the tuner's, then the strings'... In reality, if your <strong>guitar out of tune<\/strong> or doesn't hold its tuning, it's not necessarily your fault. Forget the free apps on your smartphone for now, unless they&#039;re really good. A clip-on or pedal tuner is much more accurate.<\/li> <li>A clean microfiber cloth.<\/li> <li>Powdered graphite or, if not available, a soft pencil (type 2B or 4B).<\/li> <li>Lemon oil for the keyboard (optional, but useful for general maintenance).<\/li> <li>A set of Allen keys and screwdrivers to fit your guitar.<\/li> <\/ul> <p><strong>Preliminary check steps:<\/strong><\/p> <ol> <li><strong>Old or poorly fitted strings?<\/strong> This is the first, real culprit. Try to keep the guitar in an environment with constant humidity and temperature.<\/li> <li><strong>Correct initial setup:<\/strong> If the neck is too curved, the action is too high, or the intonation is completely off, the guitar will struggle to play in tune, even when in tune. This is a crucial point that we&#039;ll address in detail, but keep in mind that a good setup is the foundation of everything.<\/li> <\/ol> <p>If you&#039;ve done these checks and the problem persists, then let&#039;s dig deeper.<\/p> <h2>Investigating the neck and nut (Nut)<\/h2> <p>These two elements are among the most critical for tuning stability and accuracy. Unscrew the old ones, screw in the new ones. Sometimes it is necessary to slightly enlarge the holes on the headstock, but often modern tuners are compatible with standard holes. Remember to pay attention to alignment.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I installed Gotoh SG381 tuners on one of my cheap Stratocasters years ago, and the difference was abysmal. Not only did tuning stop being a constant problem, but the string changing process also became much faster and less frustrating. Investing in good tuners is almost always a good choice.<\/p><h2>The Bridge: the anchor of the strings<\/h2><p>The bridge is the other point where the strings are anchored and, just like the nut and the tuners, it must allow the strings to move freely but with precision. The problems here vary enormously depending on the type of bridge.<\/p><h3>Fixed Bridges (Hardtail, Tune-o-matic, String-Through-Body)<\/h3><p>These bridges, while more stable by nature than tremolos, can still cause tuning problems if they are not in perfect condition.<\/p><ul> <li><strong>The Saddles (Saddles):<\/strong> These are the points where the string rests on the bridge. They can be made of metal (steel, brass, zinc) or other materials. <ul> <li><strong>Wear and nicks:<\/strong> Like the nut, saddles can also develop notches or grooves due to string wear. These notches can trap the string, causing it to slip or bind during tuning.<\/li> <li><strong>Roughness:<\/strong> Low-quality saddles can have rough edges or processing burrs that create excessive friction.<\/li> <li><strong>Lack of lubrication:<\/strong> Even the saddles benefit from a bit of lubrication.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Diagnosis:<\/strong> <ul> <li>Carefully observe each saddle. Do you see signs of deep wear or sharp edges?<\/li> <li>Try moving the string sideways on the saddle. Does it slide freely or does it seem to &#8220;catch&#8221;?<\/li> <li>Here too, the classic &#8220;ping&#8221; during tuning can indicate friction on the saddle.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Solutions:<\/strong> <ul> <li><strong>Lubrication:<\/strong> Use the same technique as pencil graphite (2B\/4B) in the saddle slots. Alternatively, a specific product like &#8220;Nut Sauce&#8221; can also be applied here.<\/li> <li><strong>Filing or polishing:<\/strong> If the notches are not too deep, you can try to gently file them with a specific saddle file (or a very fine nut file) or polish the surface with very fine sandpaper (1000-2000 grit) to remove burrs. Be careful not to alter the saddle's profile.<\/li> <li><strong>Replacing the saddles:<\/strong> If wear is excessive or the saddles are of poor quality, replacement is the best option. There are saddles made of brass, steel, Tusq, and other materials that can improve not only tuning but also sustain and tone. I replaced the zinc saddles of an Epiphone with steel ones from Graph Tech, and the difference in stability and sustain was tangible.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Intonation and height screws:<\/strong> Make sure that the screws that adjust the intonation and the height of the saddles are tight and have no play. A minimal amount of play can cause undesired vibrations and instability.<\/li> <\/ul><h3>Floating Bridges (Tremolo, Floyd Rose, Bigsby)<\/h3><p>Ah, the tremolo. Source of joy for dive bombs and vibrato, but also of infinite frustration if your <strong>guitar out of tune<\/strong>. Here the variables are many more.<\/p><ul> <li><strong>Stratocaster style tremolo (Vintage or Modern):<\/strong> <ul> <li><strong>Tremolo springs:<\/strong> The number and tension of the springs in the rear compartment are crucial. If the springs are too weak or unbalanced, the bridge will not return to the zero position consistently. <ul> <li><strong>Diagnosis:<\/strong> If the bridge is not perfectly parallel to the body (or slightly tilted forward if you prefer a &#8220;dive-only&#8221; setting), the springs might be the problem.<\/li> <li><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Adjust the spring plate screws to balance the tension with that of the strings. Experiment with 3, 4 or 5 springs. I usually use 3 parallel springs for a floating tremolo, but many prefer 4 or 5 for greater stability or a &#8220;dive-only&#8221; setup.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Pins (Knife Edges) and Fulcrum Screws:<\/strong> Modern tremolo bridges (2-point Strat type) rotate on two pivots. Vintage bridges (6-point) on six screws. <ul> <li><strong>Wear:<\/strong> The &#8220;knife edges&#8221; (the sharp edges of the bridge that rest on the pivots) can wear out, becoming blunt. This creates an imprecise pivot point and instability.<\/li> <li><strong>Loose pivot screws:<\/strong> The screws holding the studs (or the 6 screws of the vintage tremolo) must be well tightened, but not locked. The bridge must be able to swing freely.<\/li> <li><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Lubricate the contact points between the studs and the &#8220;knife edges&#8221; with graphite or Nut Sauce. If wear is excessive, the studs or the bridge itself might need to be replaced.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Saddles:<\/strong> The same considerations apply to fixed bridges. Lubrication is even more critical here.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Floyd Rose and Locking Systems:<\/strong> <ul> <li>These systems are designed for maximum stability, but require meticulous setup. If your guitar with Floyd Rose doesn't stay in tune, often the problem is in the initial setup or wear.<\/li> <li><strong>Locking nut (Locking Nut):<\/strong> If the string lock is not tightened correctly, or if the rubber pads under the blocks are worn, the strings can slip. <ul> <li><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Make sure the blocks are tight (with the provided Allen key). Check the condition of the rubber bearings, if they are crushed or missing, replace them.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Saddles with locking block (Locking Saddles):<\/strong> The saddles of the Floyd Rose block the string. Replacement pins are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Springs and balancing:<\/strong> Here too, the balancing of the springs is fundamental to return the bridge to the zero position. <ul> <li><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Adjust the spring tension to keep the bridge perfectly parallel to the guitar body when tuned.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Fine Tuners:<\/strong> The small tuners on the bridge. Make sure they are smooth and have no play.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>Bigsby:<\/strong> <ul> <li>The Bigsby is a tremolo with a different operation, more prone to tuning problems if not well set up.<\/li> <li><strong>Nut and Bridge:<\/strong> Here more than ever, a well-lubricated nut and saddles that allow sliding are essential. The string moves a lot.<\/li> <li><strong>Bigsby Roller:<\/strong> The roller where the strings wrap before going to the tuners must be smooth and without friction.<\/li> <li><strong>String angle:<\/strong> Sometimes a <a href=\"\/en\/modifica-chitarra\/\" target=\"_blank\">bridge roller<\/a> or a <a href=\"\/en\/modifica-chitarra\/\" target=\"_blank\">string tree<\/a> additional on the headstock to increase the string angle and prevent slipping.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <\/ul><p>A general tip for all floating bridges: after using the tremolo, always give the strings a small pull upwards (like for initial stretching) to help them \u201cseat\u201d correctly again on the contact points. This often restores tension and tuning.<\/p><h2>Intonation: when the guitar is &#8220;tuned crooked&#8221;<\/h2><p>This is a crucial and often confusing point. A guitar can be perfectly tuned on open strings, but sound completely out of tune when chords or notes are pressed on higher frets. This is an intonation problem.<\/p><ul> <li><strong>What does \u201cintonation\u201d mean:<\/strong> Intonation concerns the precision of notes along the entire fretboard. A well-intonated guitar will play the correct notes in every position, both open and at the 12th fret and beyond.<\/li> <li><strong>Typical symptoms:<\/strong> <ul> <li>You play a chord at the first fret and it's perfect, but the same chord at the ninth or twelfth fret sounds unpleasant, as if it were \u201cout of tune\u201d.<\/li> <li>The harmonic note at the 12th fret (lightly touching the string without pressing it) is in tune, but the fretted note at the 12th fret is sharp or flat compared to the harmonic.<\/li> <\/ul> <\/li> <li><strong>How to check intonation (step-by-step):<\/strong> <ol> <li>Make sure the guitar is perfectly tuned on open strings with a precise tuner.<\/li> <li>Play the harmonic at the 12th fret of a string. The tuner should indicate that it is perfectly in tune.<\/li> <li>Now, press the same string at the 12th fret (as if playing a normal note). The tuner should indicate the same note, perfectly in tune.<\/li> <li>If the fretted note at the 12th fret is sharp compared to the harmonic, the string is too short.<\/li> <li>If the fretted note at the 12th fret is flat compared to the harmonic, the string is too long.<\/li> <li>Repeat for all six strings.<\/li> <\/ol> <\/li> <li><strong>How to adjust intonation:<\/strong> <ul> <li>Adjustment is made on the bridge saddles.
