It&#039;s the tonewood of choice for many iconic Fenders, especially the Stratocasters and Telecasters of the &#039;50s and &#039;60s.<br \/><br \/>But why exactly this? <strong>alder material<\/strong>? It&#039;s not a random choice.<br \/>Its sound profile is balanced: it has a pronounced but not too aggressive midrange, good attack, and decent sustain. It&#039;s relatively soft, with a uniform, not too pronounced grain. This means it&#039;s easy to cut, mill, and sand. It won&#039;t drive you crazy with splinters or cross-grains that rip out chunks of wood when you least expect it. It&#039;s stable and doesn&#039;t move much with changes in humidity, which is crucial for the longevity of your instrument.<br \/><br \/>When I made my first leotard in <strong>alder wood<\/strong>, I immediately noticed the difference compared to the ash I&#039;d used before. Less effort with the cutter, less risk of ruining the edges. The powder is fine and not too abrasive. Maybe a single piece, maybe two or three pieces glued together. The first step is always the most exciting and, let&#039;s face it, the one where the fear of making a mistake is highest. A wrong cut here and your project could end before it even begins. But don&#039;t worry, with a little patience and the right precautions, everything will go smoothly. ### 1. Choosing the Right BlockNot all boards are made of <strong>alder wood<\/strong> They&#039;re the same. Look for a piece with straight grain, no knots or obvious defects. Check the humidity; it should be between 6% and 8% to avoid future problems. If you buy online, rely on suppliers who specialize in lutherie woods. The first time I bought a piece from a generic sawmill, it was damp and full of internal stresses. The result? It started to warp after a few months. Don&#039;t aim for perfection here; the goal is to remove the bulk of the material to make the next step easier. Haste is the enemy of precision, so go slowly and follow the line. ### 5. Precision Milling: The Ultimate ShapeNow we move on to the router. This is where the <strong>alder wood<\/strong> takes its final form.<br \/><\/em>   <strong>Tools:<\/strong> Router with flush trim bit with upper or lower bearing.<br \/><em>   <strong>Procedure:<\/strong><br \/>    1. Mount the cutter into the router, making sure the bearing rides along the edge of the template.<br \/>    2. Adjust the depth of the cutter so that it only cuts a couple of millimeters at a time. Don&#039;t try to cut the entire thickness of the body at once, as this will damage the wood and the cutter. Use multiple passes.<br \/>    3. Always work counterclockwise for a clean cut and avoid \u201cclimb cutting\u201d which can tear the wood and make the router uncontrollable.<br \/>    4. Be careful around corners and sharp turns. Go slowly.\n\n<\/em>   <strong>Common mistake:<\/strong> Wanting to do everything in one go. I&#039;ve learned the hard way that haste is the worst counselor here. <strong>alder wood<\/strong> It&#039;s soft, but if you stress it too much, it will crack. Use light strokes, and the result will be much cleaner. A sharp cutter is another secret: a dull cutter will tear and burn the wood.<br \/><br \/>At the end of this phase, you&#039;ll have a body with the perfect external shape, ready for internal routing. And believe me, seeing the shape emerge is a small but satisfying experience.\n\n<br \/><br \/><h2>Cavity Routing: Pickups, Electronics, and Tremolo<\/h2>This is the phase where you begin to \u201cempty\u201d the <strong>alder body<\/strong>, creating spaces for the vital components of the <strong class=\"mmt-keyword\">guitar<\/strong>. Precision is everything here. A millimeter more or less in the neck pocket, a crooked bridge hole, and goodbye to intonation or neck stability. It&#039;s time to unleash all your concentration. ### 1. The Importance of Internal Templates As with the external shape, you&#039;ll also need templates for the internal cavities. Template Placement: The Key to EverythingnBefore you start milling, you need to position the templates impeccably.n1.  <strong>Center Line:<\/strong> Find and accurately mark the center line of your <strong>alder wood<\/strong>. All templates must be aligned to this line.n2.  <strong>Stairs:<\/strong> Mark the position of the bridge and neck based on the scale you will be using (e.g., 25.5\u2033 for Fender). This ensures that the neck pocket and bridge are the correct distance apart. 3.  <strong>Fixing:<\/strong> Use the same fastening method as the external template (double-sided tape or screws in hidden spots). Make sure it doesn&#039;t move even a millimeter. ### 3. Neck Pocket Routing: The Heart of the Coupling The neck pocket is perhaps the most critical routing. It must be accurate to the nearest tenth of a millimeter.<br \/><em>   <strong>Depth:<\/strong> The Fender standard is 5\/8\u2033 (about 15.875 mm). Take your time here, it&#039;s worth it.\n\n<br \/><br \/><h2>Finishing: Protect and Shine Your Alder<\/h2>You worked hard, your <strong>alder body<\/strong> It&#039;s shaped just right, the cavities are perfect, and the contours are smooth. Now comes the part that can make or break your entire work: the finish. It&#039;s your instrument&#039;s skin, its protection and its aesthetic calling card. And, trust me, it&#039;s also the step where I&#039;ve made the most mistakes ever. ### 1. Final Preparation: Cleaning and Further Sanding Before you think about varnishes or oils, your body needs to be immaculate.<br \/><em>   <strong>Fine sanding:<\/strong> Sand to at least 320-400 grit. If you want an open-pore or oil finish, you can stop there. If you want a high-gloss finish, you can go up to 600.<br \/><\/em>   <strong>Cleaning:<\/strong> Vacuum up all the dust. Then use a tack cloth to remove any remaining particles. Even a speck of dust can create a visible defect under the paint.<br \/><em>   <strong>Inspection:<\/strong> Put on cotton gloves (to avoid fingerprints) and inspect the body under a low light. Look for scratches, dents, or imperfections. If you find any, go back to the previous grain and correct them. It&#039;s your last chance! ### 2. Choosing the Finish: The DIY Luthier&#039;s DilemmaThere are different schools of thought and different types of finishes. Each has its pros and cons, and the <strong>alder wood<\/strong> It fits almost everyone.\n\n<\/em>   <strong>Oil\/Wax Finishes (e.g. Tru-Oil, Danish Oil):<\/strong><em>   <strong>Pros:<\/strong> Easy to apply, they give a natural feel to the wood, they do not create a thick layer. Excellent for the\u2019<strong>alder<\/strong> which does not have overly aggressive veining.<br \/>    <\/em>   <strong>Against:<\/strong> Less protective against impacts and humidity, they require more maintenance.<br \/>    <em>   <strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Apply thin coats with a cloth, letting them dry thoroughly between coats (up to 24 hours). Lightly sand with very fine sandpaper (1000+) after the first coats to close the pores. Continue with 5-10 coats, then buff.<br \/>    <\/em>   <strong>Mimmo&#039;s advice:<\/strong> The first time I used too much oil, my body looked greasy. Then several thin coats of paint, with light sanding (600-800 grit) between each coat after drying.\n\n<em>   <strong>Nitrocellulose Paints (Nitro):<\/strong><\/em>   <strong>Pros:<\/strong> The quintessential &quot;vintage&quot; finish, this thin finish allows the wood to &quot;breathe&quot; (according to many). It ages well, cracking and yellowing slightly.<br \/>    <em>   <strong>Against:<\/strong> Much more difficult to work with (requires many coats, very long drying times, toxic), less resistant to impacts and solvents.<br \/>    <\/em>   <strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Similar to polyurethanes, but with many more layers and waiting times between layers that can reach weeks for final curing.\n\n<em>   <strong>Spray Paints (can):<\/strong><\/em>   <strong>Pros:<\/strong> Affordable, they don&#039;t require expensive equipment. You can achieve good results with patience.<br \/>    <em>   <strong>Against:<\/strong> Less control, risk of dripping, finish not always uniform.<br \/>    <\/em>   <strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Primer, then very thin, even coats. Never spray too close together or for too long in the same spot. Use quick, overlapping strokes. ### 3. Applying the Finish: Patience, Patience, Patience.
