SSH single-single-humbucker: asymmetrical pattern

If you are looking for a ssh wiring Clear and practical, you're in the right place. Here you'll find the diagram, explanations of the connections, and tips for avoiding common mistakes.

Introduction

es339 cablaggio jack schema img 01es339 cablaggio corpo elettronica img 01

This asymmetrical diagram mounts two single-coils (bridge and middle) and one humbucker in the neck position.40 It offers a warm and deep tone at the neck, balanced by the typical brightness of the single-coils at the bridge and middle.30 It uses parallel compensation resistors to balance the load of the potentiometers.43

SSH single-single-humbucker: schema asimmetrico

Download the SVG diagram and use it as a reference while soldering. The star ground is the central point: all ground wires must converge there.

How to read the diagram

It requires a neck humbucker (4 conductors), two single-coils (bridge and middle), a logarithmic volume potentiometer of , two tone potentiometers of or no-load, two resistors of for compensation, and a 5-way lever switch.18 The hot conductor of the humbucker connects to terminal 5 of the selector.12 The hot conductors of the single-coils connect respectively to position 1 (Bridge) and 2 (Middle).12 In positions 1, 2, and 3, the selector inserts the resistor of between the hot signal and the volume casing, softening the frequency response of the single-coils.17

Practical steps

  • Prepare the components and check the values of potentiometers and capacitors.
  • I soldered the hot wires following the diagram, avoiding unnecessary jumpers.
  • Connect all the masses to the indicated star point.
  • Check the continuity between the bridge, jack and potentiometer covers with a multimeter.
  • Test the instrument and fix any buzzing.

Tips to avoid buzzing

Avoid the ground loopIf the potentiometers are on a common metal shield, do not solder ground wires between their caps. Use an open "C" or "horseshoe" path and connect each ground to the star center. For more information on modifications, see also guitar modification guide.

FAQ

Which potentiometers should I use?
It depends on the pickup: single-coil generally 250k, humbucker 500k, active 25k.

Can I use a different capacitor?
Yes, but the value changes the cutoff frequency of the tone. Higher = darker sound.
