At first, like many, I relied on a simple hobbyist jigsaw. The kind you find in any hardware store, to be clear. And I must say that, with the right precautions, miracles can be done. Or, at least, acceptable cuts. My first body, shaped like a “slightly squarer potato”, was born exactly like that. It wasn't perfect, but it was my. And it played!
The jigsaw has its pros: it's cheap, versatile, and relatively easy to handle. The downside? Precision. Blades tend to flex, especially on thick woods, and getting a perfectly perpendicular cut is a challenge. Curves can come out “stepped” if you don't have a steady hand and the right blade.
Garage tip: choose blades with fine teeth specific for wood. Metal blades are too aggressive and leave a bad cut. Wide-toothed blades for wood do a rougher job. Look for “scroll” or “curving” blades if you need to make tight curves. And don't be afraid to make slow passes. Haste, here, is the enemy of form.
If you have the chance, a band saw is another planet. It's more expensive, takes up more space, but the precision and cleanliness of the cut are incomparable. The thin, continuous blade reduces flexing and allows for much smoother curves. If you find one used at a good price, it's an investment that pays off. But it's not one of the tools needed to build an electric guitar to start, it's more of an “upgrade”.
My typical mistake: not securing the piece to be cut properly. With a jigsaw, the wood tends to vibrate, and goodbye precision. Use clamps, lots of clamps. 2. The router: where precision meets power
If the saw gives you the rough shape, the router is the tool that carves the heart of your guitar. Without it, forget about a decent neck pocket, clean pickup cavities or electronics routing that doesn't look like it was made by a beaver. I tried at first with chisels and a Dremel to make the cavities. Result? Hours of work, curses, and cavities that looked more like lunar craters than pickup routs. Don't do it. Or, if you do, know that it will cost you a lot of time and frustration.

- Roundover bit (roundover bit): to chamfer the edges of the body, giving that soft feel to the touch.
My typical mistake: wanting to do everything in one pass. The router is powerful, but if you try to remove too much material at once, you risk tearing the wood, burning it, or, worse, losing control of the tool. Make light passes, 2-3 mm at a time. And always use a good template made of thick MDF (at least 12mm) or multi-layered plywood. Secure it to the body with strong double-sided tape or clamps.
Milling technique: For most jobs, you should rout in a “climb cut” for the first surface layer (against the direction of the router bit's rotation, to avoid chipping) and then in a “conventional cut” for subsequent passes. Or, more simply, always make passes from the edge towards the inside of the cavity, following the direction of the router bit's rotation (clockwise for routing the outside of a template, counter-clockwise for routing the inside of a template, if the router rotates clockwise). 3. The drill: straight holes without drama
Seems trivial, right? A drill. We all have one. But try to make a perfectly straight hole for the bridge posts, or for the headstock tuners, or for the output jack, and you'll understand that it's not so obvious. A crooked hole can ruin the string alignment, the bridge stability, or simply the aesthetics of your guitar. It's one of the tools needed to build an electric guitar where precision is everything.
A drill press is every luthier's dream, even a hobbyist's. It guarantees perfect perpendicularity and constant depth. If you have one, use it. If you don't, don't despair. I built my first guitars with a hand drill and a few tricks.

- Drilling jigs: These are guides that help you keep the drill perpendicular. You can buy them or build them yourself with wooden blocks and precisely pre-drilled holes.
- “Eyeball” technique: Place the drill on the piece, make a tiny pilot hole, then use a larger bit. Look from multiple angles to ensure the bit is straight. It's not scientific, but with a bit of practice, you'll improve.
- Appropriate bits: For wood, use “Brad point” bits (those with a central point that guides the hole). They are much more precise than standard metal bits and reduce chipping. For wider, cleaner holes (e.g., for the jack or potentiometers), Forstner bits are excellent.
My typical mistake: Drilling without a scrap piece under the wood. When the bit exits the opposite side, it tends to tear the wood fibers, creating an ugly chip (tear-out). By placing a piece of scrap wood under the exit point, the bit passes through it as well, keeping the fibers of your body intact. This trick has saved me from more than one disaster.

4. Sanding and finishing: patience pays off (and not just a little)

I spent entire nights sanding, and every time I thought “enough, now I'll paint”. Then, under the right light, all the imperfections would pop out: the waves, the scratches from the previous grit, the small dents. Haste, here, is a condemnation.
Files and Rasps:
They are used to quickly remove large amounts of material and to define curves. Rasps are more aggressive, with large teeth, and leave a deep mark. Files, with finer teeth, are for precision work.
- Wood files: flat, half-round, round. A basic set allows you to tackle almost any curve.
- Rasps: for initial roughing, especially on hardwoods.
Sandpaper:
Here a world opens up. You'll need different grits, from the most aggressive to the very fine:
- Coarse grits (80-120): to remove the deepest saw or router marks, and to shape curves.
- Medium grits (150-220): to eliminate marks from previous grits and start smoothing the surface.
- Fine grains (320-400): for optimal preparation for finishing.
- Very fine grits (600-1000+): for wet sanding between coats of paint, or for polishing oil finishes.
Garage tips:
- Sanding blocks: Never sand with your bare hand. Irregular pressure will create grooves and “waves”. Use wood, cork, or rubber blocks, wrapping the sandpaper around them. This distributes the pressure evenly.
- Increase grit gradually: Don't go from 80 to 320. Each grit must remove the marks of the previous one. A good progression could be 80 -> 120 -> 180 -> 220 -> 320 -> 400.
- Grazing light: To spot defects, use a light that hits the surface from the side, almost grazing it. Imperfections will pop out like ghosts.
- Clean the dust: After each grit, thoroughly clean the surface of dust with a tack cloth or compressed air. Dust from the previous grit can scratch the wood when you use the next grit.
Patience is key. Every hour spent sanding well will save you two trying to correct a ruined finish.
5. The soldering iron and multimeter: the electronic soul that comes to life
We come to the beating heart of your guitar: the electronics. You might have built the most beautiful body in the world, with a perfect neck, but if the electronics don't work, your guitar will just be a nice ornament. A good soldering iron and a multimeter are not just useful, they are tools needed to build an electric guitar that really plays.
I still remember the frustration of the first times: everything connected, at least on paper, and then… silence. Or an infernal hum. I spent hours checking wires, redoing solders by eye, until I realized I needed something more.

My typical mistake: take for granted that the components were intact or that the cable was good. How many times have I disassembled and reassembled a circuit only to find that the potentiometer was faulty or that a cable had an invisible break. The multimeter gives you the answer in a few seconds.

At first, I made do with what I found, but when I invested in a decent set, I realized how much time and effort I had wasted before.
Then there are the templates. I mentioned them for the saw and the router, but they are also crucial for drilling. A good set of templates for drilling the tuners on the headstock, for example, ensures they are perfectly aligned. And what about the neck pocket template? If you don't have a router with an arm long enough to copy a rigid template, or if you want to do an impeccable finishing job, a template is your salvation. You can make them from good quality MDF or plywood, with a little patience and a band saw or a precise jigsaw.
Low budget: Look for inexpensive clamp sets in DIY stores, or take advantage of online offers. For templates, MDF is your best friend: it's cheap and easy to work with. You can also use thick cardboard for temporary templates or to test shapes.
Medium budget: You can start investing in clamps from more renowned brands, which offer greater grip and durability. There are also pre-cut templates for some guitar models, which can save you time.
High budget: If budget is not an issue, you might consider purchasing a kit of professional acrylic or metal templates. Some manufacturers also offer solutions for more complex routing jigs that guarantee absolute precision.
Let's not forget about measuring tools. A digital caliper (even a 20-euro one) is an indispensable tool for precise measurements. Steel rulers with millimeter divisions, squares, and a good tape measure will be constantly useful. Precision is fundamental, even when it comes to a few tenths of a millimeter, especially concerning the neck and bridge.
And for finishing? Besides sandpaper and blocks, you'll need soft cloths, sticks for applying paints or oils, and perhaps a mask to protect yourself from fumes. If you opt for spray paints, you'll need to consider a compressor, a spray gun, and a suitable (or at least well-ventilated) environment.
The neck: a separate challenge (and why it's better to start with a kit or a pre-made neck)
Let's be clear: building a guitar neck from scratch is one of the most arduous challenges in DIY lutherie. It's not on my top 5 list tools needed to build an electric guitar because, for your first project, I strongly advise you to buy a pre-made neck or start with a kit. And now I'll explain why.

- Truss Rod: Installing the truss rod in the routed channel in the neck requires precision. If the channel is too wide or too narrow, or if the truss rod is not of good quality, you might have stability problems.
- Fretting: Fret installation (fretting) is an art. It requires specific cutters, a fret hammer (or a press system), files for leveling and beveling, and great care to avoid damage to the wood or the frets themselves.
- Neck profile: Shaping the back of the neck (the profile, which can be “C”, “V”, “U”, etc.) requires a steady hand and good ability to use files and rasps to achieve an ergonomic and pleasant shape.
My first experiences with necks: I tried to route the truss rod channel with a straight bit and a template. Result? A slightly wavy channel. Installing the truss rod was an agony, and I had to fill some gaps with putty and glue. It wasn't a total disaster, but the neck's stability suffered. And the fretting... let's not even go there. I scratched the wood, bent some frets. In the end, I had to take the neck to a luthier to fix most of the problems.

Body: the wood, the shape, and the decisions that matter
If the neck is the brain, the body is the heart and “body” of your guitar. This is where many of the sonic and aesthetic characteristics reside. The choice of wood and the shape of the body are crucial decisions that will influence the sound, weight, and final aesthetics of your instrument.

You can download free templates online, or design your own. If you are starting out, I recommend choosing an already established shape, perhaps with simpler contours to create.
Tips for working the body:
- Buy seasoned wood: Avoid woods that look “green” or too wet. Well-seasoned wood is more stable and less prone to warping.
- The template is your best friend: As I said, a well-made template is essential. Make sure it is at least 12mm thick and that the edges are perfectly smooth to guide the router.
- Gluing the body (if necessary): If your body is made up of multiple pieces (common for alder and basswood), make sure the surfaces to be glued are perfectly flat and that the gluing is uniform. Use good quality wood glue and don't skimp on clamps.
- Contours and bevels: Once you have the rough shape, use files, rasps, and radius cutters to create the ergonomic contours and bevels on the edges. This is not only aesthetic but greatly improves the comfort of the instrument.

The final setup: the point where everything comes to life
You've built your body, you have your perfect neck, you've assembled the electronics. Fantastic! But before your guitar can finally sing, there's a fundamental step: the setup. This is the process of adjusting all components to achieve the best possible playability and intonation. And here, even if they are not real tools, you will need precision “instruments” and a good dose of patience.
The setup is what transforms an assembled guitar into a musical instrument ready to be played. And I assure you that a guitar with an excellent setup, even if built with less expensive components, will sound better than an expensive but poorly set up guitar.
What do you need to adjust?
- String Height (Action): This is the distance between the strings and the fretboard. An action that is too high makes the guitar hard to play, an action that is too low can cause “fret buzz” (the strings touching the frets). Adjustment is done via the bridge screws (or individual saddles).
- Intonation: It ensures that the guitar is in tune along the entire length of the fretboard. It is adjusted by moving the bridge saddles forward or backward until the open note and the note played at the octave (on the 12° fret) perfectly match.
- Neck curvature (Truss Rod): As mentioned, the truss rod adjusts the neck curvature. A slight concavity (relief) is necessary to avoid fret buzz. It is adjusted with a specific Allen key, turning clockwise to reduce the curvature (or increase the concavity) and counter-clockwise to increase it (or decrease it). Attention: make minimal adjustments (a quarter turn at a time) and let the neck “settle” for a few hours before checking again.
- Pickup height: The height of the pickups relative to the strings affects their output (volume) and their tonal character. Experiment to find the spot you like best, but keep in mind that pickups too close to the strings can create intonation problems or a “nasal” sound.
- Capo: The nut slots must be of the correct depth and width for the strings. If they are too deep, the strings will sound low at the beginning of the fretboard. If they are too narrow, the strings might get stuck or sound bad.

- Allen keys: Of various sizes, essential for adjusting the truss rod and some bridges.
- Screwdrivers: Of different sizes and types (flathead, Phillips) to adjust saddle height and pickup screws.

A 40W soldering iron and an inexpensive multimeter (15-20€) are a must. Sandpaper, files, and sanding blocks can be found at affordable prices. For the rest, make do with what you have or build your own jigs.
Medium Budget (200€ – 500€ for tools):
You can afford a good brand entry-level router (like a Bosch or a Makita 1000-1200W), a used drill press or a new basic model, a temperature-controlled soldering iron, and a more precise multimeter. You can also invest in a more complete set of quality router bits and files.
High Budget (over 500€ for tools):
Here we enter the realm of semi-professional tools. A more powerful and precise router, a branded drill press, a set of very high-quality router bits, a soldering station, and precision measuring instruments. In this range, you might also consider purchasing some specific luthier tools, such as precision hand planes or high-end orbital sanders.
What not to cut corners on:
- Safety: Protective glasses, noise-canceling headphones, and gloves are a non-negotiable investment.
- Quality router bits: Even if you have a limited budget, invest in the best router bits you can afford. Cheap ones will make you suffer and could ruin the wood.
- Good brand sandpaper: It makes a huge difference in the quality of the finish.
My philosophy has always been: start with the essentials, learn to use what you have well, and then, little by little, upgrade your tools as you gain experience and your budget allows. There's no need to have everything right away to start building your guitar.
Remember that the satisfaction of playing an instrument you built with your own hands, overcoming every obstacle, is priceless. Don't be intimidated by the tool list. Start with these 5, put in passion and patience, and your dream will take shape.
