Does your guitar rattle? Electric refracting!

Do you hear that sound? A dull buzz, a note that dies prematurely, the strings rattling on the neck like a freight train on old tracks. And it's not your tube amp's fault. It's a problem many guitarists know well: worn frets. Maybe your guitar is a vintage gem, or a DIY project you built with your own hands and which now shows the signs of many hours of playing.

I am not a professional luthier, let's be clear. I am someone who, like you, has spent hours in the garage assembling, disassembling, soldering and, yes, also making mistakes. I refretted my first electric guitar a few years ago, and I assure you that the fear of ruining the neck was great. But after banging my head against it, reading guides, watching videos and, above all, having Done, I understood that it is an operation within the reach of a hobbyist with a bit of manual skill and a lot of patience.

If your guitar rattles, if the action is too high because the frets are worn, or if you simply want to give new life to your instrument, the refracting of the electric guitar is what you need. I won't hide that it's a delicate job, but if I succeeded, you can too. I will guide you step by step, with the mistakes I made and the solutions I found.

Diagnosis: Understanding why your guitar rattles

Before picking up files and hammers, it is essential to understand exactly what is wrong with your guitar. The “rattling” is a generic symptom that can hide various problems, not all related to worn frets. The correct diagnosis will prevent you from doing useless or, worse, harmful work.

The first step is observation. Do the strings rattle on all frets or only in a specific area of the neck? Does the problem occur only on some strings or on all of them? This information provides valuable clues.

A typical rattle due to worn or unleveled frets often manifests with “dead” notes or a metallic buzz when a string is pressed on a certain fret, and the string touches the next fret or even further along.

Common Causes of Rattling

  1. Worn or Unleveled Frets: This is the most common cause when the guitar is a few years old or has been played a lot. Wear creates grooves on the frets, especially under the most used strings. This leads to an uneven surface, where some frets are lower than others.
  2. Misadjusted Truss Rod: The truss rod is the metal rod inside the neck that adjusts its curvature (neck relief)back-bow), the strings will be too close to the frets, causing rattling. If it is too convex (up-bow), the action will be high but buzzing could still occur at the end of the fretboard.
  3. Action Too Low: THE'’action is the height of the strings from the fretboard. If the bridge saddles (saddles) or the nut (nut) have been lowered excessively, the strings will not have enough space to vibrate freely without touching the frets.
  4. Worn or Badly Cut Nut: If the nut slots are too deep, the strings will be too low on the first frets, causing buzzing only in that area.
  5. Loose or Poorly Adjusted Bridge: Less common, but a bridge that is not firmly attached to the guitar body or has loose saddles can generate unwanted vibrations.
  6. Climatic Variations: Humidity and temperature can cause the neck wood to move, altering the curvature and fret height.

The Fret Rocker: Your Best Diagnostic Friend

To precisely identify unlevel frets, the indispensable tool is the fret rocker. It is a metal bar with four sides of different lengths, perfectly straight. Its use is simple but effective.

  1. Place the fret rocker on three consecutive frets.
  2. If the rocker “rocks” (as in, it rocks) on the central one, it means that the central fret is higher than the two adjacent ones.
  3. If it doesn't rock, try moving it one fret at a time along the entire fretboard.

This will allow you to precisely map the points where the fretboard is not level. If you find many frets that “rock”, it is a strong indicator that leveling is necessary or, in more serious cases, refretting.

Remember, haste is the enemy of good work. Take the time necessary for an accurate diagnosis. Sometimes, a simple adjustment of the truss rod or action can solve the problem without having to resort to more drastic interventions.

When leveling is not enough: The call for refretting

Once the problem has been diagnosed, the next question is: level the frets or refret? Leveling (or fret dressing) is a less invasive and less expensive process that consists of removing a small amount of material from the frets to make them perfectly planar. It is the first line of defense against buzzing.

I have done dozens of levelings in my small garage workshop, and I assure you that the satisfaction of seeing a fretboard return to perfect condition is priceless. But there are limits.

Fret Leveling: The First Solution

Leveling is effective when:

  • The frets show superficial grooves or moderate wear.
  • There are only a few unlevel frets, identified with the fret rocker.
  • No leveling has been performed previously, or only one has been performed, still leaving sufficient material on the frets.

The leveling process involves applying a marker to the frets, using a file or an abrasive block (leveling beam) to sand away excess material until the marker disappears from all frets, the subsequent crowning (crowning) to restore the rounded profile and, finally, polishing.

It is a job that requires precision, but it is definitely simpler and less risky than a complete refret. However, each leveling reduces the height of the frets. There comes a point where there is no longer enough material for proper crowning, and the frets become too low to be played comfortably.

When Refretting Becomes Inevitable

Refretting, or the complete replacement of all frets, becomes the necessary solution when:

  • Frets Too Low: After one or more levelings, the frets have become too low. Playing becomes difficult, fingers touch the fretboard, and intonation suffers. I myself, on my old Stratocaster, tried to get by with frets that were almost invisible before giving in to the evidence.
  • Extreme Wear: The grooves on the frets are too deep to be eliminated with a simple leveling without rendering the frets unusable.
  • Extensive Damage: Some frets are damaged, bent, or have come off the fretboard.
  • Change of Material or Size: You want to switch to a different type of fret (for example, from small vintage frets to modern jumbo frets) or to a more resistant material like stainless steel.

The choice of material for new frets is important. The most common are:

  • Nickel-Silver (Nickel Silver): It is the traditional alloy, used on most guitars. It is relatively soft, easy to work with, but wears out faster. There are different grades, but the most common is 18% nickel.
  • Stainless Steel (Acciaio Inossibile): Much harder and more wear-resistant. Stainless steel frets last practically forever. The downside is that they are more difficult to work with (requiring specific and sharper tools, and greater force for bending and installation) and can give a slightly different feel under the fingers. For a hobbyist, working with stainless steel can be quite a challenge.
  • Evo Gold (Brass): A more recent alternative, it offers an intermediate hardness between nickel-silver and stainless steel, with a golden color that can be aesthetically pleasing.

On my Les Paul, I opted for a set of high-quality nickel-silver jumbo frets. I didn't want to deal with the complexity of stainless steel for my first serious job, and I was very satisfied with the result.

Preparation: The home luthier's workshop

If you have decided that the replacement of guitar frets is the way to go, preparation is half the battle. A clean, well-lit workspace and the right tools will save you hours of frustration and possible damage.

Work Area and Essential Equipment

You will need:

  • A Solid Workbench: A sturdy table on which to rest the guitar stably.
  • Neck Supports: Specific wood or rubber blocks to securely support the guitar neck, without damaging the headstock or fretboard. I often use wooden blocks with felt-lined “V” shapes.
  • Protections: Paper masking tape (body shop type) to protect the guitar body and fretboard (if not painted maple).
  • Soldering Iron: To heat the frets and soften any residual glue. A fine tip is ideal.
  • Fret Pliers (Fret Pullers): Specific tool for extracting old frets. They are designed to gently pry without chipping the fretboard. StewMac's are excellent, but there are also cheaper alternatives. Do not use generic pliers: you risk damaging the wood.
  • Wire Cutters: To cut new frets to size.
  • Rubber or Plastic Hammer: To install new frets if you don't use a press.
  • Cyanoacrylate Glue (CA Glue) or Wood Glue: To fix the new frets.
  • Toothbrush or Stiff Brush: To clean the fret slots.
  • Slot Scrapers (Fret Slot Cleaners): Thin tools to remove glue residue and dirt from the slots.
  • Mask and Safety Glasses: Essential for your safety.

A personal tip: invest in good tools. A pair of quality fret pliers will make the difference between a clean job and a chipped fretboard. I learned the hard way that saving on the right equipment only leads to more problems and frustration.

Disassembly and Protection

  1. Remove the Strings: It seems obvious, but make sure to remove all strings.
  2. Remove the Neck (If Possible): If your guitar has a bolt-on neck, removing it will give you much more freedom of movement and reduce the risk of damaging the body. For guitars with set-neck or neck-through necks, you will have to work with the neck attached.
  3. Protect the Body: Cover the guitar body with paper masking tape or a soft cloth. This will protect the finish from scratches or accidental drops of tools.
  4. Protect the Fretboard: If the fretboard is painted maple, cover it with masking tape, leaving only the frets exposed. This prevents damage to the finish during removal and installation. For rosewood, ebony, or pau ferro fretboards, protection is not strictly necessary, but you can still apply tape along the edges for maximum caution.

Removal of Old Frets

This is the most delicate phase. The goal is to remove the frets without chipping the fretboard wood.

  1. Heat the Fret: Use the soldering iron to gently heat the fret. Pass the tip of the soldering iron over the top of the fret for about 10-20 seconds. The heat softens any glue and helps the wood release the fret with less resistance. Do not overdo the heat, especially on maple fretboards or with delicate inlays.
  2. Extract the Fret: Position the fret pliers under one end of the fret, as close as possible to the fretboard. Apply gradual and constant upward pressure, gently prying. Work from one end of the fret to the other, alternating sides if necessary, to slowly extract it. Do not try to rip it off forcefully. If you feel resistance, heat again.
  3. Check for Damage: Inspect the slot and the surrounding area. It is normal for some small wood chips to lift, especially with drier rosewood fretboards. You can repair these small chips with super thin cyanoacrylate glue before installing the new frets.
  4. Repeat: Proceed fret by fret, with patience. I usually start from the first fret and go towards the last, but there is no fixed rule.

Cleaning the Slots

Once all frets are removed, the slots will be full of glue residue, dust, and dirt. It is essential to clean them thoroughly to ensure that the new frets fit perfectly and settle uniformly.

  1. Use a Scraper: Use a slot scraper or a small screwdriver with a thin tip (but be careful not to widen the slots) to remove coarser residues.
  2. Brush: Use a toothbrush or a stiff brush to remove fine dust.
  3. Compressed Air: A blast of compressed air can help remove more stubborn residues.

Make sure the slots are of the correct depth and width. If they are too narrow, the new frets will struggle to enter and you could damage the fretboard. If they are too wide, the frets will not have a firm grip. In case of slots that are too wide, you can add some cyanoacrylate glue and fine wood dust to fill the space, letting it dry and then cleaning the slot again.

The Art of Installing New Frets: Precision and Patience

With the old frets removed and the fretboard clean, it's time to give new life to your instrument. The installation of new frets is the heart of the refracting and requires a combination of technique, patience and, once again, the right tools.

Choosing and Preparing Fret Wire

The choice of fret wire (fret wire) is crucial and depends on your preferences and the type of guitar. As I said, there are different alloys and especially different sizes:

  • Vintage (e.g. .079″ x .043″): Small and narrow, ideal for a traditional feel and for bending with more fretboard contact.
  • Medium Jumbo (e.g. .100″ x .047″): A very popular middle ground, it offers a good balance between playability and durability.
  • Jumbo (e.g. .110″ x .055″): Large and tall, they facilitate bending and vibrato with less effort, as fingers almost never touch the fretboard.

Once the wire type is chosen, you need to prepare it:

  1. Bending (Radius): Fret wire is sold straight. To install it correctly, it must be bent with a radius slightly narrower than your fretboard's radius. This ensures that the fret ends rest firmly on the edges of the fretboard, preventing lifting. There are specific machines for bending the wire, but it can also be done by hand with a little care or with a hand tool called fret bender.
  2. Cut to Size: Cut each piece of wire slightly longer than the corresponding slot. Leave about 1-2 mm extra per side. This will give you room for subsequent finishing. Use specific wire cutters to avoid crushing the fret crown.

Installation: Hammer or Press?

There are two main methods for installing new frets:

Hammering Method

This is the most accessible method for a hobbyist, the one I used for the first time. It requires a good rubber or plastic hammer (never metal!) and a steady hand.

  1. Prepare the Fret: Apply a drop of super thin cyanoacrylate glue into the fret slot, or a small amount of wood glue. Cyanoacrylate glue is excellent because it penetrates well and dries quickly.
  2. Position the Fret: Place the fret in the slot, aligning it carefully.
  3. Hammer Gently: Start gently hammering the center of the fret, then move towards the ends, alternating sides. The blows must be firm but controlled, to seat the fret without making it bounce. Listen to the sound: a dull tone indicates that the fret is well seated, a sharper sound indicates that it is not yet fully in place.
  4. Check Seating: After hammering, check that the fret is completely flush with the fretboard and that the ends are well adhered. You can use a small square or a wooden block to check. If one side lifts, hammer a little more in that spot.
  5. Clean Excess Glue: If you use cyanoacrylate glue, immediately clean the excess with a damp cloth or a cotton swab soaked in acetone (be careful not to damage the fretboard finish, especially if it is varnished).

My experience has taught me that patience is key. I had to reposition and re-hammer some frets, but in the end, the result was excellent.

Pressing Method

This method uses a fret press, which can be manual or column-mounted. It is faster and offers a more uniform installation, but requires a greater investment in equipment.

  1. Prepare the Fret and Slot: As with the hammering method, apply the glue.
  2. Use the Correct Insert: The press uses curved inserts that match the fretboard radius. Choose the appropriate insert.
  3. Apply Pressure: Place the fret in the slot and apply constant pressure with the press. The pressure must be sufficient to fully seat the fret in the slot.
  4. Check and Clean: Verify seating and clean excess glue.

The advantage of the press is that it distributes force evenly along the entire fret, reducing the risk of high spots or lifted ends.

Regardless of the chosen method, proceed one fret at a time. Check each newly installed fret to ensure it is secure and that there are no gaps between the fret and the fretboard. Small errors at this stage will affect the entire fretboard.

The Finishing: Leveling, Crowning, and Polishing

You have installed all the new frets. Great job! But your guitar is not yet ready for the stage. Frets, however well installed, will never be perfectly level with each other. This is where the finishing phase comes in, the one that transforms a good job into an excellent one. This is the part where you really perceive the difference between a careful luthier and a less precise one.

Initial Leveling (Leveling)

Even newly installed frets can have small height differences. To level them:

  1. Protect the Fretboard: If the fretboard is made of unvarnished wood (rosewood, ebony), protect it with masking tape between the frets to avoid scratching or damaging it during sanding.
  2. Mark the Frets: Use an indelible marker to color the top of each fret. This will serve as your guide.
  3. Sand: Use a sanding block (leveling beam) perfectly flat, with fine abrasive paper (e.g. 220-320 grit). Pass the block gently and evenly over all the frets, with long, straight movements along the fretboard. The goal is to remove material from the higher frets until the marker disappears from all frets.
  4. Check: Periodically, clean the dust and check your progress. If you still see areas with the marker, it means those frets are lower and you need to continue sanding the others. Don't rush.
  5. Check with the Fret Rocker: Once the marker has disappeared from all frets, run the fret rocker over the entire fretboard to ensure there are no more wobbles. This is a crucial test.

Crowning (Crowning)

After leveling, your frets will have a flat surface on top, like small rails. This is not good for intonation and sustain. They need to be “crowned”, meaning to restore their original rounded profile, leaving only a small contact point with the string.

  1. Use a Crowning File: These tools have different grooves that fit different fret sizes. Choose the right one for your fret wire.
  2. File Gently: Pass the file over the flat part of each fret, with delicate and controlled movements, until the rounded shape is restored. The goal is to leave a thin line of marker on the top of the fret, indicating the highest point.
  3. Check the Profile: Make sure the profile is symmetrical and uniform on all frets.

This phase is an art. I spent hours perfecting the crowning, because this is where much of the playability comes into play. A well-crowned fret allows the string to vibrate freely and in tune.

Beveling the Ends (Beveling)

The ends of the frets, after being cut, will likely be sharp and protruding. They must be beveled so as not to cut the guitarist's hand and for a professional appearance.

  1. Use a Beveling File (Fret Beveling File): These files have a preset angle (usually 35 degrees) that helps you achieve a uniform bevel.
  2. File with Care: Run the file along the edges of the fretboard, beveling the ends of the frets. Be careful not to damage the fretboard or the binding (if present).
  3. Round the Edges: After beveling, you can use a small file to gently round the sharp edges of the fret ends, making them soft to the touch.

Polishing (Polishing)

The last step is polishing, which will make your frets shiny and super smooth for bends.

  1. Fine Sanding: Start with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 400-600 grit) and gradually proceed with higher grits (800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, 4000) using a small block or even just your fingers. The goal is to remove coarser sanding marks.
  2. Abrasive and Polishing Paste: Use a fine abrasive paste (e.g., car body compound or specific fret polish) and then a metal polish. Apply with a soft cloth and rub vigorously.
  3. Clean the Fretboard: Remove all protective tape. If the fretboard is rosewood or ebony, nourish it with a specific fretboard oil (e.g., MusicNomad F-ONE Oil or lemon oil) to hydrate the wood and restore shine.

Once polishing is complete, your frets should be smooth as a mirror. It's a laborious process, but the difference in playability is incredible. Bends will be fluid and the strings won't "catch" on the frets.

The Final Setup: Bringing Your Instrument to Life

There Complete regrinding It was a success, your frets are perfect. Now it's time to put everything back together and set up the guitar to play its best. This phase is as important as the refretting itself, because excellent fret work can be nullified by a poor setup.

I've seen too many guitars with brand new frets play poorly because the owner forgot about the setup. Don't make the same mistake!

Reassembly and Initial Settings

  1. Reassemble the Neck (If Disassembled): If you had removed the neck, reassemble it carefully, tightening the screws evenly.
  2. Install the Hardware: Reassemble the bridge, tuners, and all other components you had removed.
  3. Install New Strings: Don't skimp on strings. A new, good quality set is essential for an accurate setup. Choose the gauge (gauge) you prefer.
  4. Intonate the Strings: Each string must be correctly intonated in its place.

Truss Rod Adjustment (Neck Relief)

With the new frets, the neck relief (neck relief) might have changed. It's the first parameter to adjust.

  1. Check the Relief: Press a string (usually the low E) at the first fret and simultaneously at the last fret (or where the neck joins the body, usually the 17th fret). Look at the space between the string and the 7th/8th fret. There should be a very small gap, about the thickness of a business card or slightly more (0.15-0.25 mm).
  2. Adjust the Truss Rod:
    • If the gap is too large, the neck is too convex (up-bow). Tighten the truss rod (generally clockwise) a quarter turn at a time.
    • If there is no gap or the neck is concave (back-bow), loosen the truss rod (counter-clockwise) a quarter turn at a time.
  3. Allow to Settle: After each adjustment, allow the neck to settle for a few minutes (or even an hour) before rechecking.

Action Adjustment (String Height)

Now that the neck has the correct relief, you can set the string height.

  1. Bridge Saddles: Adjust the height of the individual bridge saddles to achieve the desired action. I usually start with a medium action and then gradually lower it until I hear a slight buzz, then raise it just a tiny bit. Standard measurements vary, but a good starting point is 1.5-2 mm for the low E and 1.2-1.8 mm for the high E at the 12th fret.
  2. Nut: Check the string height at the nut. If the strings are too high on the first frets, it might be necessary to slightly file the nut slots. Be careful, as this is a delicate and irreversible operation. If the slots are too low, you will need to replace the nut.

Intonation

After adjusting action and relief, the intonation might be off.

  1. Tuning: Tune the guitar perfectly.
  2. Check Intonation: Play the open string and then the same note at the 12th fret (harmonic and fretted). The two sounds must be identical.
  3. Adjust the Saddles:
    • If the note at the 12° fret is flat compared to the harmonic, move the bridge saddle forward (towards the headstock).
    • If it's sharp, move the saddle back (towards the bridge).
  4. Repeat and Recheck: Adjust one string at a time, retuning and rechecking until each string is in tune both open and at the 12° fret.

Final Test

Finally, it's time to play! Connect the guitar to the amplifier and try every note, every bending, every chord across the entire fretboard. Listen carefully for any buzzing, dead notes, or intonation problems.

Don't be afraid to go back and make small adjustments. Setup is an iterative process. Your guitar is now reborn, with brand new frets and a playability it probably hasn't had in years, if ever. You've accomplished a true home luthier's feat, and the satisfaction will be immense.

There refracting of your electric guitar is a journey, not a simple repair. It's a path that allows you to get to know your instrument thoroughly, to overcome your fears, and to acquire valuable skills. It's not a job to be taken lightly, but with the right preparation, adequate tools, and a lot of patience, it's an operation that, like me, you can successfully complete. Remember that every mistake is an opportunity to learn and that the final result, a guitar that sounds like new, will repay every single effort. Now, pick up your guitar and enjoy the sound without that annoying buzzing anymore.

How long does it take to refret a guitar?

For a hobbyist approaching refretting for the first time, the time required can vary significantly. Between removing old frets, preparation, installing new ones, leveling, crowning, polishing, and final setup, you might spend 8 to 20 hours of actual work, spread over several days to allow the glue to dry and the wood to settle.

Can I refret a lacquered maple fretboard?

Yes, it's possible to refret a lacquered maple fretboard, but it's a more delicate job. The lacquer can chip more easily during fret removal, and you might need to touch up the finish after installing the new frets. It's crucial to protect the lacquered surface very well with quality adhesive tape and to heat the frets with extreme caution before removal.
