Spindle (chuck) and precision (runout)

The chuck must be of good quality, easy to tighten and precise. Precision is measured by “runout”, which is the deviation of the bit from its ideal axis.   • Spindle travel adequate for almost all bodies.

Against:

High-End (over 600€): For those who don't want compromises

If lutherie is a serious passion, almost a job, or if you have extreme precision needs and a generous budget.

Typical features:

  • Motor: 750W (1 HP) or more, often induction.
  • Speed: Very wide and precise continuous electronic variator.
  • Spindle travel: 80-100mm or more.
  • Chuck: Very high quality, Morse taper attachment, minimal runout.
  • Construction: Entirely cast iron, zero vibrations.
  • Extras: Advanced lighting, quality clamps, digital displays.

Examples of brands:

Jet, Optimum, Record Power, Delta, Powermatic. These are the machines you find in professional workshops. A luthier friend has a Jet JDP-17, the difference is palpable.

Against:

Practical guide to using the drill press for guitar

Having the column drill right is only half the battle. Knowing how to use it correctly, safely, and with the appropriate techniques will allow you to achieve the desired results and not ruin your precious wood.

Safety first

I will never tire of repeating it: safety is fundamental.

  1. Goggles: Always, without exception.
  2. Gloves: Avoid loose gloves that could get caught.
  3. Hair and clothes: Tie back long hair and make sure there are no loose garments.
  4. Clean work area: Remove tools and debris from the table.

Workpiece clamping: NEVER freehand!

This is the most common and most dangerous mistake.

  • Drill vice: For small or irregular pieces, the best solution.
  • C-clamps or bar clamps: For larger pieces like guitar bodies, to firmly secure the wood to the table. Always use a “backer board” (scrap piece of wood) underneath to prevent chipping.

  • Through holes: Always use a “backer board” under the piece to prevent wood tear-out (breakout).
  • Blind holes: Precisely set the depth stop. Always do a test on a scrap piece.
  • Countersunk holes: First drill the through hole, then use the countersink.
