Cheap kits usually have a clear polyurethane base that you can sand and paint over.
- Nitrocellulose (Nitro): The “vintage” finish par excellence. It offers a warm aesthetic, ages well (it cracks, yellows) and allows the wood to “breathe” better, influencing the sound. It is difficult to apply, toxic (requires a mask and a ventilated environment) and less resistant than polyurethane. Very expensive and not recommended for the first project.

If the kit includes a set-neck (glued) neck, the procedure is more complex and requires specific wood glue and many clamps. For a first kit, bolt-on is definitely more approachable.

The bridge is crucial for intonation and sustain. Its position is predefined by the holes in the body, but it's important to mount it correctly. Follow the kit instructions, ensuring it is secure and aligned. For tremolo bridges, there are springs and screws to manage; for fixed bridges, it's simpler.
