This helps tuning stability and reduces the risk of the string getting stuck in the nut. If your headstock does not have an angle (like many Fender style ones), staggered tuners can be a good choice. Then there’s the gear ratio (gear ratio). This number indicates how many full turns of the tuning key are needed for the post to make a full turn. An 18:1 ratio means you have to turn the tuning key 18 times for the post to rotate once. Sperzel were among the first and are still highly regarded. A final note on locking mechanism: most use a knurled wheel on the back of the mechanism that tightens an internal clamp.   • Pencil or awl (awl): To mark the exact points where to drill.
  • Pliers or rope cutter: To cut old and new excess strings.
  • Soft cloth: To clean the scoop and protect it during work.
  • Work gloves (optional): To avoid leaving fingerprints or to protect your hands.
  • Nut lubricant (optional but recommended): A little graphite (from a pencil tip) or a specific nut lubricant can further improve tuning stability by reducing friction.

Having everything at hand before starting will save you time and frustration. And trust me, there’s nothing worse than realizing you need a tool halfway through the job, with your guitar disassembled on the table.

Handle Preparation: Measure Twice, Cut Once

This è the most delicate phase, where haste can be costly. Preparation è everything, especially when it comes to drilling holes in wood.

1. Removal of the old mechanics

First, remove the strings. Then, with the appropriate screwdriver, unscrew the small screws on the back of the headstock that hold the old tuners in place.   2. Existing holes are smaller (e.g. 8.5 mm): This means you have vintage-style tuners. You have two options:
    • Look for self-locking mechanisms specific for vintage holes (they exist, but the choice è more limited).
    • Enlarge the holes to 10 mm. This operation requires maximum caution.

If you need to enlarge the holes: Take a 10 mm drill bit. Before drilling, cover the front of the headstock with masking tape. This helps prevent the finish from chipping when the bit goes through the wood. Drill from the front of the headstock (where the tuning posts are visible), with the drill in a vertical position and at low speed. Don't press too hard! Let the bit do its job. Drill one hole at a time, checking often that it is straight. If the holes are too large for your new tuners (less common scenario, but possible with some conversions), you might need conversion bushings or to fill and redrill the holes, but this è a more complex job that often requires professional intervention. For our DIY guide, we assume you have chosen compatible tuners or that you can enlarge the holes.

4. Marking the new screw holes (if necessary)

Many locking tuners, especially modern ones, have a small pin or tab on the back that fits into an additional hole on the headstock to prevent rotation. Others use a screw. If your new tuners have a different screw or pin pattern than the old ones, you will need to drill new holes. Temporarily insert the new tuners into the headstock holes without fastening them. Align them precisely. You can use a ruler or a straight piece of wood to ensure they are all perfectly aligned horizontally. Once positioned, use a sharp pencil or an awl to mark the exact spot where the screw or pin of each tuner will go. Remove the tuners. Now, with a small drill bit (1.5-2 mm) and masking tape for protection, drill the pilot holes. Remember: the depth of the hole must not exceed the length of the screw. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the drill bit to mark the maximum depth to reach. Drill slowly and steadily, keeping the drill perfectly perpendicular to the surface. This è the moment when many hobbyists get stuck for fear of ruining the headstock. Don't be afraid, take all the time you need. Check and recheck the measurements. An error here è difficult to remedy.

The Step-by-Step Assembly: From the Box to the Stage (almost)

Once the headstock è ready, installing the new self-locking mechanisms è relatively simple. Follow these steps calmly and carefully.

1. Insertion of mechanics

Take your new locking tuners and insert the central post of each into the corresponding hole on the headstock, from the front. Make sure each tuner è oriented correctly, with the locking wheel (if present) facing the back and the string hole aligned.

5. Installation of the fixing screws

With the pilot holes ready, position the tuners and screw the small screws onto the back of the headstock. Tighten them by hand with an appropriate screwdriver. Do not overtighten! The screws are there to hold the tuner in place, not to split the wood. Just make sure they are snug. Overtightening can damage the wood or the screw itself.

6. Final tightening of the bushings

Now, with the socket wrench or the socket, tighten the hexagonal bushings on the front of the headstock. Here too, “snug” (firmly secure) is the keyword, not “deadly”. Excessive tightening can deform the wood, damage the mechanics, or make future disassembly difficult. The bushings must hold the mechanics still, but there's no need to apply excessive force.

7. String installation and test

Now you can string the guitar. Insert the string into the tuning peg hole, pull it taut. Then, lock the locking mechanism (usually a thumbwheel on the back of the tuner). Leave a little “slack” but not too much, just enough for half a turn or a full turn of the peg. The idea is that the string is locked even before you start winding it. Once locked, tension the string and tune it. You'll see that just a few turns (sometimes not even a full one) will be enough to reach the desired tuning. Cut the excess string with wire cutters. Do some bending, use the tremolo bar if you have one, and check the tuning stability. You should notice an immediate difference. It's a moment of pure satisfaction, almost like when you hear the first chord on a guitar you assembled yourself.

  3. Drilling with too much haste or without tape: When enlarging holes or drilling new ones, haste can lead to chipping the headstock's finish. Use paper masking tape to protect the surface and drill slowly, with constant but not excessive pressure.
  4. Overtightening (tighten too much): Whether it's the hexagonal bushings or the set screws, overtightening è harmful. It can damage the wood, deform the mechanics, or break the screws. “Firmly secure” è sufficient. You don't have to lock an engine.
  5. Misalignment of mechanics: A set of locking tuners misaligned on the back of the headstock is an eyesore. Take the time to align them perfectly before marking and drilling the screw holes. A ruler or a small spirit level can help you.
  6. Ignore the capo: Locking tuners improve stability, but do not solve nut problems. If the nut slots are too narrow, too wide, or not well lubricated, the string will still get stuck, causing tuning problems. Make sure the nut is in good condition and, if necessary, lubricate it with graphite or specific products. Once, I was convinced that my new self-locking keys were defective because the guitar kept going out of tune. In the end, I discovered that the problem was a cheap plastic nut with narrow and poorly cut slots. I had to modifying my guitar replacing the nut.
  7. Do not understand the locking mechanism: Some people block the string and then make too many wraps, nullifying the advantage. The string should be inserted, blocked, and then wrapped only for the minimum tension necessary for tuning. The idea is to minimize the wraps.
  8. Using the wrong tools: Don't improvise. Use screwdrivers of the right size, the correct socket wrench. Do not use pliers or adjustable wrenches that can ruin nuts and finishes.

Remember, DIY is a learning process. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn and do better next time. But with a little care and by following these tips, you can install your locking tuners successfully on the first try.
