Les Paul and “The Log”: One Man, One Saw, One Idea

nnnnnHere enters another absolute genius, Les Paul. Yes, him, the one from Gibson Les Pauls. Les Paul was an innovative guitarist and a tireless inventor. He was obsessed with feedback and wanted to eliminate it. His intuition was brilliant in its simplicity: if feedback comes from the resonating soundbox, then let's eliminate the soundbox!nIn 1941, Les Paul took an Epiphone acoustic guitar, sawed it in half lengthwise, and glued a solid 4×4 inch block of wood in the middle. Then, he reassembled the two halves of the soundbox only for aesthetic reasons, to make it look like a “normal” guitar. He called it “The Log” (the log).

The Log was ugly, but it worked. The solid body almost completely eliminated feedback, allowing for much higher volumes and a sustain (the length of the note) that was unthinkable with hollow-body guitars. The sound was different, more direct, with a more pronounced attack.
